A handy online course for those wanting to know more about the basics of Cryptography, courtesy of the University of Washington. They also recommend one of my favourite Crypto books as a useful text – Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier.
As well as being able to do remote reconnaissance of a target through Google (see: http://johnny.ihackstuff.com) you can also use Google in the first step to crack MD5 hashes.
As an experiment, create an MD5 from a string (This site was useful). Now do a search in google based on that MD5. Bingo! Nice and fast and no rainbow tables or other computation needed.
